Worldskills Regional Cooking Competition

Worldskills KSHSThe 2019 VETiS Commercial Cookery Cooking Competition was held in Karratha. 15 students from across the Pilbara region were invited to participate and showcase their kitchen skills.

Three Yandeyarra students travelled to Karratha, with their teacher, Jessica Albers, to participate in the Regional event.

Yandeyarra cookingThe skills-based competitions operate at regional, national and international levels, and are aligned to National Training Packages, Apprenticeships Australia and Jobs Australia schemes. In this competition, students competed ‘master chef style’, demonstrating their skills while being assessed based on the Certificate 2 Kitchen Operations.

All students had to cook and serve 3 course meal, from set recipes. Planning, workflows, kitchen safety, hygiene, work organisation and management, food preparation skills, cooking skills, presentation and taste were judged. 11

Everyone worked hard, with strict timeframes to prepare an entrée of duo bruchetta, main course of chicken, vegetables and duchess potatoes, and a lemon polenta cake with syrup and chantilly cream for dessert.

The event was a huge success, with everyone trying their best, working well under pressure and presenting some really tasty dishes.

A huge thanks to Worldskills, Karratha SHS, and teacher Nickie Ralph for all the hard work that went into organising the day.
