STEM Challenge

Newman STEM Challenge

As part of the BHP Pilbara Educational Partnership Launch, Yandeyarra students were invited to participate in the STEM Challenge at South Newman Primary School in December.

After a 4.5 hour journey south, four Yandeyarra students were warmly welcomed by South Newman Primary School and Pilbara Education Regional Office staff members to Newman. img_2468

The day included four challenges; Coding, Robotics, Science and Engineering. Students from South Newman P.S, Newman P.S, Jigalong RCS, Yandeyarra RCS and Pilbara School of the Air formed mixed teams to compete in the activities, supported by Newman SHS students.

Teams had guidance from the Pilbara Academic Enrichment Coordinators Claire Chalk and Melanie Hatwell, as well as a range of wonderful Newman staff.

img_2476As part of the formal proceedings, students had the opportunity to listen to David Axworthy and Neil Darby (Department of Education) and Edgar Basto (BHP), to hear more about the Pilbara Educational Partnership with BHP.

All students demonstrated excellent skills and application in the challenges, and we are very pleased that two Yandeyarra students (Red Team) were part of the winning team for the STEM Challenge award!

A huge thank you to everyone who made the launch so successful, particularly Chelsea and David from PERO and the lovely warm welcome from Amanda and all the staff at South Newman P.S. We hope to be invited again in 2017 as part of the annual academic enrichment program.
