The first EON Interschool Cooking Competition was held in August at the new Youth Involvement Centre in South Hedland.
The three Pilbara EON schools; Yandeyarra RCS, South Hedland PS and Strelley School were invited to the event, which involved students forming three teams to prepare and serve three meals to judges and students.
Other activities included planting with EON, nutrition with Foodbank and germ busting with Earbus.
Students had the challenge of using produce from their gardens to prepare meals from the Foodbank or EON cookbooks, then also prepare a snack of their own choosing.
Yandeyarra students LaToya, Glynelle, Shaquade, Shoniqua, Zaharni and Corey prepared two meals from the Foodbank ‘Healthy Recipes for All’ cookbook; ‘Fasta Pasta’ and ‘Fancy Fish Patties’, and baked ‘ABCD muffins’, a recipe of their own.
Students picked fresh produce from the Yandeyarra garden before the event, including parsley, chives and sweet potatoes and even made their own pesto for the pasta.
South Hedland PS received the most votes from judges and students and were the winners of the event, however all schools received a set of cooking, gardening and sports equipment. Thanks for the great equipment!
Students had a great time, and we thank all the supporters of the event, in particular EON, Foodbank, Earbus and Pilbara Population Health. Thanks also to YIC for hosting the event at their wonderful premises and to all the other staff involved in making the day so successful.
